By BFD Staff
October 9, 2014

At 6 p.m. on Thursday, October 9th, member of the Bedford Fire Department were dispatched on two separate alarms for a motor vehicle accident with injuries on Old Post Road and an outside smoke investigation on Interstate 684. Responding Ambulance 52-B1 was quickly put back in service due to the minor nature of the accident, while Engine 109 continued towards the interstate to investigate the smoke condition.

Multiple calls were made reporting a large area of smoke on I-684, and additional units were dual dispatched from Armonk Fire Department to investigate. Both Car 2023, and Car 2043 canvassed the area and confirmed a large area brush fire, visible from 684 near the Armonk/Bedford border. Engine 109 and Engine 110 continued onto Chestnut Ridge Road to search, while Car 2023 and Rescue 85 remained committed to the interstate.

Well outside of our fire district, a large brush fire almost an acre in size was located by Car 2043 and Engine 109 on Byram Lake Road, between the roadway and Byram Lake. First due Engine 109 stretched multiple lines to quickly put water on the fire, while command Car 2043 requested Tanker 7 and Mini Attack 11 from Banksville for additional water and equipment. Car 2044 and Engine 110, while enroute to the "north" fire, located a secondary brush fire of moderate size further down Byram Lake Road, situated several hundred feet into a wooded trail. Due to a lack of numbered houses in the area, the fires were assigned "north" and "south" designations, and, to confirm locations, air support was received from Westchester County PD.

Car 2044 established command at the "south" fire, and was backed up by Armonk Tanker 9 and North White Plains Engine 74. Additional resources from Mount Kisco, Bedford Hills, and Pound Ridge were moved to the scene and to backfill Bedford and Armonk Fire Departments. On scene coordination was handled by WCDES Battalion 16, County Car 4, and North Castle Police. The fires remain under investigation by the Cause and Origin Team.

Units: Car 2043, Car 2044, Engine 109, Engine 110, Utility 140

Mutual Aid: Armonk, Banksville, Bedford Hills, Mount Kisco, North White Plains, Pound Ridge
