| On Sunday, January 18 2008, members of the Bedford Fire Department participated in an ice rescue drill, utilizing the pond on the Fox Lane School campus. Thanks to the recent cold weather, we were finally able to suit up in our "dry suits" and practice different rescue and recovery methods out on the ice. Instructed by Foreman Jerome Newman, Firefighters Dan Kollmer and Juan Cerda, department members took out the ice rescue sled and stuck a "victim" in an open part of the pond to be rescued by the teams. Groups were rotated throughout the different positions to simulate all aspects of an ice rescue call. For the duration of the drill, a full crew stood by with Ambulance 52-B1 as a precaution. Following several hours out in the cold weather, members and equipment returned to the firehouse to dry off and warm up. Photos courtesy of Foreman Jerome Newman. |
