On two consecutive Monday nights, Bedford FD members had the chance to drill with the Katonah Fire Department members at their training pad. Bedford provided two junked vehicles - a sedan and SUV - for the evolutions..

The members were able to walk around and review the specialized tools and equipment carried on both Rescue 44 and Rescue 17 prior to the extrication drill on 11/15. Two teams were created, one for each vehicle, and all extrication techniques were practiced. We also tried to use as much of our equipment as possible to review concepts like door pops and removals, window punch out and glass cutting, use of hydraulic spreaders, rams, and cutters, cutting and removal of seats and pedals, dashboard and steering column rolls, post cutting and roof removal, hood access, and cribbing.

The following week, members returned to train with live fire on the vehicles. We were able to see how fire spreads throughout the vehicles, reviewed the hazards associated with car fires, and practiced various extinguishment techniques.

We would like to thank Katonah Fire Department for hosting such a great series of drills. Photos courtesy of K. Branche and G. Glauber.
