Chimney Fire on Stone Hill Road
Email Print RSS Facebook Twitter RSS

By First Assistant Fire Chief Graham Glauber
December 26, 2022

On Monday, December 26th, 60 Control dispatched Bedford Fire units for a reported chimney fire at 121 Stone Hill Road.

Car 2042 was updated while responding that the fire was in an out building, and was hard to access for full sized apparatus. Because of this, Bedford Hills Mini Attack 9 and Pound Ridge Mini Attack 21 were added to the assignment.

On arrival, smoke was showing from the roof ridge of a 20 x 80 single story wood frame building. All large apparatus were staged on Stone Hill Road, and all tools and personnel were shuttled into the scene by Utility 140, Utility 6 and Pound Ridge chiefs vehicles.

Car 2042 had command with Car 2033 and Car 2401 assuming operations; a metal wood-burning stove was in use, and wood framing members near the chimney stack had ignited. All ceiling and wall areas were opened up and extinguished with water cans, while a hand line was stretched from Mini Attack 21 to the exterior. Small pockets of fire were located in the roof members and were extinguished.

Additional areas were checked with thermal imaging cameras and opened up. As part of salvage operations, the stack was removed entirely from the roof, and the roof was closed back up. Westchester County Cause and Origin investigators were on scene for the fire.

Following extinguishment, the building was vented and checked with meters. Units remained on scene for roughly two hours before being put back in service.

Units: Car 2042, Engine 109, Engine 110, Utility 140, Ambulance 52-B2

Mutual Aid: Bedford Hills Car 2033, Tower Ladder 57, Mini Attack 9, Utility 9, Pound Ridge Car 2401, Car 2402, Tanker 3, Mini Attack 21, Bedford PD, WCDES Cause and Origin Team
