§ 41-1. Definitions.

As used in this chapter, the following terms shall have the meanings indicated:

BUILDING — The principal building or buildings on each lot; it shall not be deemed to include any minor building.

§ 41-2. Determination.

The Town Building Inspector is hereby authorized to decide which building or buildings on any particular lot may be numbered.

§ 41-3. Duty of owners.

It shall be the duty of every owner of a building in the Town of Bedford to cause to be displayed either on the building or on a mailbox, lamppost, sign or pole the street number of said building and at all times to maintain such number in compliance with the provisions of this chapter.

§ 41-4. Size and display.

A. The figure or figures comprising the number to be displayed on a building or on a mailbox, lamppost or sign pole hereunder shall be at least three and one-half (3 1/2) inches in height, made of a reflective material and shall be placed on the front of said building or on a mailbox, lamppost, sign or pole hereunder in a prominent and conspicuous place and in such manner as to be plainly legible from the center of the street at all times between sunrise and sunset. The color of said figures shall be in sharp contrast to the color of their background; provided, however, that so far as the purpose or intent of this chapter is concerned, the front of a building shall be construed as that side of the building which faces the street on which the number or numbers shall be displayed on such side of such building or premises. If the posted numbers are affixed to the property front door, they must be affixed or placed above or to the side of said front door.
B. The numbers shall be so placed so that they will not be obstructed by trees, shrubbery, porches or other extensions of the building. Numbers placed on a tree or driveway marker shall be affixed or placed so that the bottom of the number shall be at least three and one-half (31/2) feet above the ground level.
C. Wherever practicable, said number shall be placed near some light or source of illumination so that it may be readily seen at night.
D. Where the building upon which the number is to be displayed is more than fifty (50) feet from the edge of the right-of-way (whether improved or not) of the street or road serving the building, the number shall be displayed on a mailbox, lamppost, sign or pole readily visible from the road or street and in no event further back than five (5) feet from said road or street right-of-way. Where numbers are affixed or placed on a tree or driveway marker, they must be no more than five (5) feet from the driveway.
E. Numbers affixed or placed upon any front door, marker, tree, mailbox, lamppost, sign or pole must be visible from both directions.

§ 41-5. Display of other numbers prohibited.

Each separate building or dwelling shall be assigned a separate distinguishing number by the Town Board of the Town of Bedford in conformity with a uniform numbering system encompassing the entire town. The display of any house number other than the number assigned by the town is expressly prohibited.

§ 41-6. Noncompliance; notice.

A. Noncompliance deemed a violation. Any person, corporation, partnership or other entity owning a building within the Town of Bedford refusing or neglecting for sixty (60) days after notice from the Town Building Inspector to place the proper designated number on said building shall be deemed in violation of this chapter.
B. Service of notice. The notice provided for in Subsection A may be given by personal service or by mailing a copy thereof to the last known address of the owner.

§ 41-7. Penalties for offenses.

Any person violating any of the provisions of this chapter shall, upon conviction, be punishable by a fine not to exceed two hundred fifty dollars ($250.) or by imprisonment for a term not to exceed fifteen (15) days, or both.
