Halloween Safety Tips for Children Halloween is one of the year’s most thrilling nights for our children, but it can also be dangerous. Protect your children by taking the following precautions: - Carry a flashlight and wear a watch with luminous digits that can be read in the dark.
- Carry identification with contact numbers and addresses.
- Walk on well-lighted sidewalks and walk in a group. If no sidewalks are available, walk on the farthest edge of the road facing traffic.
- Walk, not run, while trick-or-treating and obey all traffic signs and signals.
- Never run in streets or cut across yards and alleys.
- Wear safe costumes – costumes that aren’t too long to pose a tripping hazard, are flame-resistant and have sufficient eyeholes. Costumes, clothing and trick-or-treat bags should also have reflective markings or tape.
- Carry flexible knives, swords and other props.
- Trick-or-treat in well-known neighborhoods. Never enter a stranger’s home or car.
9. Never consume unwrapped or open items or pet animals you don’t know. Adults are reminded that they should accompany children under 12 years old on their rounds. And, immediately report suspicious or unlawful activity.
