Residential Alarm Turns Into Working Fire on Hook Road

By Firefighter Graham Glauber
June 28, 2008

Smoke and heat detectors are one of the best investments you'll ever make. At 6:37 pm, on June 28th, an automatic residential alarm was received at 187 Hook Road, with an "all zones" activation. Arriving Car 2041 performed a quick size up of the structure, and reported a working fire in a second floor room with fire through the roof.

Engine 109, just up the driveway from Car 2041, laid two handlines to the roof and through the interior (through means of forcible entry). A ground ladder was set up on the "B" side of the structure, where a line was quickly raised and charged to extinguish the flames. A cut off saw was also used by the arriving truck company to cut through the roof and help ventilate the fire room.

In accordance with a first alarm assignment, two tankers from Katonah and Bedford Hills Fire Departments were dispatched, with Bedford Hills Fire Department's Tower Ladder 57 as the truck company, and Utility 13 from Mount Kisco as the acting FAST assignment. WCDES Battalion 16 was also on location, and requested the Cause and Origin Team to the scene.

To handle two injured firefighters at the scene, both KBHVAC ambulances and a medic from WEMS were utilized; both were transported for evaluation to Northern Westchester Hospital.

Following an investigation by Zone 5 Cause and Origin Team members, mutual aid units were released, and all Bedford units returned to quarters. Banksville Engine 158 and Armonk Ambulance 51-B2 were released from standby at the Bedford firehouse as well. The fire was determined to be accidental; the house was unoccupied and undergoing renovation.
