| Led by First Assistant Chief Joanne Aquilino, the Bedford Junior Corps traveled to the Bedford Park on Monday, October 20, 2008, to try an unusual method of self contained breathing apparatus training. The children's play sets at the park were a perfect setting for search and rescue and confined space practice.
The evening began at the Bedford fire house with Firefighter Brian Tramontozzi demonstrating the proper donning and doffing of SCBA packs. The demonstration also included safety and maintenance details and the proper procedure for removing the pack in confined space situations.
Following the demonstration, the Junior Corps assembled their turnout gear and helmets and, along with regular members of the fire department, traveled to the Bedford Park to practice what they had just learned. At the park, each Junior Corps member was paired with a regular department member and given the opportunity to crawl, climb, and feel their way over and through the various challenges that the equipment presented. The evening finished back at the fire house with Junior Corps members cleaning and filling the SCBA packs and returning all packs to their proper places on the apparatus.
The Junior Corps committee would like to thank Firefighter Brian Tramontozzi, Firefighter Joe Iantorno, Lieutenant Jenaro Reino, Firefighter Casey Clark, Firefighter John Arena, Firefighter Sarah Kalarchian and Firefighter Pete Lazaro for their help and mentorship of the Junior Corps.
We would also like to thank Junior Corps members Zach Grossbaum, Jake Warshaw, Gregg Goldberg, Tommy Farrell, Dena Skeadas and Matt Clark for participating in this evening's drill. |
