| For the monthly Junior Corps drill, members headed down to the Fire Training Center in Valhalla, New York to practice and perform mask confidence in the new simulator. Junior Corps members have been trained in the past in mask confidence and SCBA use following the OSHA "F" training requirement.
Before entering the building in teams, members Dave Wollin , Karina Warshaw, and Graham Glauber, as well as Westchester County Fire instructors reviewed the air packs, as well as tips and tricks for getting through the course.
Once ready, the Junior Corps members assembled in teams of two, and followed a hose line through the mask confidence course. Tradeoffs were made between group leaders, and in the last evolution, wax paper was used on the inside of the masks to simulate limited light visibility in a working fire condition.
At the conclusion of the drill, a discussion was led by the members talking about what they thought was challenging and interesting in the simulated environment. Everyone successfully made it through the course, and walked away with new techniques for sounding floors, shifting packs, breaching walls, and getting out safely. |
