| When Ex-Chiefs Paul Aquilino and John Barry stepped outside of the fire house for some fresh air on Wednesday, June 24th., they got a breath of heating oil instead. Upon closer inspection, the scent was traced to an oil spill, leading down the curb from the Village Green Deli to the front of the firehouse. They immediately alerted 60 Control to a fluid spill in front of the building, bringing additional members to the scene to contain the liquid.
It was determined that an oil truck that had been idling on the roadway was leaking, and left prior to the arrival of our members. In doing so, the truck put several gallons of heating oil onto the roadway. Parked cars were moved from their parking spots as speedy dry and oil-absorbing boom pads were laid down to collect additional material. Pads were also placed in front of the storm drains to prevent any additional runoff and contamination.
Bedford Police soon assisted at the scene, closing the involved stretch of road and diverted traffic. The Bedford Highway Department was also requested with a sand truck to cover up and absorb any additional oil on the roadway.
The bulk of the product was swept up and collected by BFD members, and was disposed of properly thereafter. |
