Tractor Trailer Rollover on Long Ridge Road

By Engineer Graham Glauber
March 9, 2010

On the afternoon of March 9th, both Bedford Fire and EMS crews were dispatched to the intersection of Twin Lakes Drive and Long Ridge Road for a reported tractor-trailer rollover with extrication.

Upon the arrival of Car 2043, it was determined that a rollover had occurred involving one vehicle, and the driver had been removed from the cab prior to our arrival. The truck, a Mack tractor with a 53 foot flatbed trailer loaded with mulch pallets, had lost control around the turn just past Millers Mill Road on Long Ridge Road, and rolled to a stop on its side several hundred feet down the road.

The driver was evaluated and packaged on scene by the crew of Ambulance 52-B1 and a Westchester EMS medic, and was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. Officers of the Bedford and Pound Ridge police departments assisted several BFD members in handling traffic, closing the road at the intersections of Pound Ridge Road (Route 172) and Pine Brook Road (Pound Ridge side); Twin Lakes Drive was also closed to traffic. Members on Rescue 44 and Engine 110 checked the truck to make sure all fluids were not leaking, and a handline from Engine 110 was set up with foam as a precaution. Tow operators from Reliable Towing utilized two heavy duty wreckers to upright the tractor trailer in one piece and remove it from the scene.

Travel on Long Ridge Road remained restricted as the scene was turned over to the Bedford Highway Department for several hours, utilizing a bucket loader and multiple dump trucks to clean up the scene.
