At 1:33 a.m. on Wednesday, June 20th, reports of a motor vehicle accident with extrication and an unconscious person in the area of the Shell Station (848 South Bedford Road) were received by 60 control. Car 2041 and Car 2043 were quickly on scene with the Bedford Police to confirm an extrication of a single patient from a Jeep Grand Cherokee that had left Old Post Road at a high rate of speed.
Ambulance 52-B1, Rescue 44, and Engine 109 were all responding within a minute of each other, and quickly arrived at the accident to begin the extrication. All available hydraulic tools were set up with both our on board systems and portable pumps. Bedford EMS and Westchester EMS worked together in the car to stabilize the patient while crews worked to remove the door and other hardware that had been crushed into the drivers compartment following the wreck. Bedford Hills Rescue 10 was also requested as a precaution to have a second rescue and set of tools on the road.
After the appropriate cuts were made, all personnel worked together to free and properly package the patient, who was transported ALS to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, New York.
Engine 109 and Rescue 44 remained on location to help clean up the debris field, sweep fluids, and provide lighting for Pratow as they removed the vehicle. Old Post Road was closed for the duration of the incident.
