Never Forget

Malodorous MVA on Interstate 684

By Foreman Graham Glauber
October 31, 2012

It was Halloween night, and Bedford was dark. There was no electricity, not even a spark. No lighting, no laptops, no cellular phones, yet alerted we were, to the sound of our tones. "To the Interstate!", they said, and off we went, to an accident call with a terrible scent.

Poetry aside, the members of the Bedford Fire Department were finishing up a lighting detail in "The Farms", a popular spot for trick-or-treating every Halloween, when they were called to Interstate 684 Northbound in the area of the Chestnut Ridge Road overpass for a multi-vehicle accident with rollover.

Ambulance 52-B1, Engine 109, Engine 110, and Utility 140 immediately responded along with Car 2041 and Car 2043. Because Rescue 44 was out of service for the night, Armonk FD was requested with Rescue 85 for additional tools and equipment. Arriving units located a three-vehicle accident involving a sedan, tractor-trailer, and loaded portable toilet truck, with the tanker rolled over on its side. Luckily, most of the material stayed inside the truck, as the tank did not rupture during the accident.

Two patients were self-extricated prior to our arrival and were transported via 52-B1 and Armonk EMS Ambulance 51-B2 to Westchester Medical Center for evaluation, while a third patient refused medical attention. New York State Police helped to control traffic, and crews from Reliable Towing were able to upright the vehicle and remove it from the scene – all lanes were re=opened shortly thereafter.

Units: Car 2041, Car 2043, Car 2044, Car 2045, Ambulance 52-B1, Engine 109, Engine 110, Utility 140

Mutual Aid: Armonk FD Car 2023, Ambulance 51-B2, Rescue 85, WCDES Battalion 16, WEMS 45-Medics, NYSP
