Bedford's Bravest Battle an Afternoon Barn and Brush Fire

By YP Graham Glauber
December 10, 2006

On Sunday, December 10, 2006, at approximately 12:35 in the afternoon, members of the Bedford Fire Department were dispatched to 689 South Bedford Road on a reported brush fire that had been called in from passers by on South Bedford Road. When Car 2043 and Bedford Police arrived on scene, it was determined the adjacent house to 689 South Bedford contained a large brush fire burning up a hill, some distance from the roadway. Additionally, a barn was found fully involved in fire. Tankers from Banksville and Pound Ridge Fire Departments were dispatched to the scene. Additional members of the Bedford Fire Department responded with Car 2041, Rescue 44 and Engine 110 to 454 Succabone Road, a house located atop the hill containing the brush fire to extinguish and prevent the fire from spreading to a larger area. Our Mini Attack 7 (an all wheel drive brush truck) responded to 689 South Bedford Road directly into the brush fire to attack it from the woods.

As for the barn, Engine 109 dropped a five inch supply line at the end of the driveway and stretched it to the involved barn. Additional hand lines were used to suppress the fire.

Battalion 16 arrived on scene shortly thereafter, requesting additional man power from Mt. Kisco Independent Fire Company's Engine 105 and Utility 13. In order to supply the tankers, Bedford Hills Fire Department was requested to send Engine 198 to establish a water source just a few feet down the road at the pond in front of the Fox Lane High School. Also, Bedford Hills Tanker 5 was sent to add an additional tanker to the shuttle.

Armonk's Chief 2021, Ambulance 51-B1 and Engine 286 were sent to standby at the Bedford Fire Department.

After several hours on scene the brush fire and the barn fire were successfully extinguished. Due to the "jump" the fire had and the time it took to discover the actual fire, not much of the structure was left.

We'd like to thank all of the firefighters and fire departments that responded and helped out as mutual aid for the duration of the call.

The Zone 5 Cause and Origin Team is still investigating the cause of this fire.
