Working Duct Fire at Fox Lane Middle School

By YP Lieutenant Graham Glauber
February 23, 2007

At approximately 14:53 hours on the afternoon of Friday, February 23, 2007, members of the Bedford Fire Department were dispatched on a possible working fire in the ducts on the third floor of the Fox Lane Middle School. Shortly thereafter, Chief Matt Halpin, Car 2041, confirmed an active fire in the Central Building on the middle school campus.

Bedford's Engine 110 arrived quickly on scene, pulling up next to the structure and laying three inch hose up to the third floor, whereupon the fire was quickly knocked down. Armonk Fire Department was dispatched due to the unknown water supply available. A hydrant on campus was later used to supply Engine 110. Additionally, Mt. Kisco Fire Department was called to provide additional manpower to assist with ventilation and overhauling of the affected area. Bedford Hills Fire Department responded with Tower Ladder 57 on a FAST assignment, and to provide assistance as well.

Due to the smoke, large fans from Engines 109 and 110 were brought in to help ventilate the building. The Zone Five Cause and Origin team was requested along with the Bedford Police Department to investigate the cause of the fire. The duct that the fire originated in was an exhaust vent from the generator located in the basement of the structure. Luckily, the fire was reported early and the damage was limited to a relatively small area.

Units were cleared from the scene around 16:30 hours and returned to repack and clean the hose.

A big thank you to the Pound Ridge Fire Department with Engine 113 that provided stand-by in Bedford headquarters during the event.
