Working Garage Fire on Harris Road
Email Print RSS Facebook Twitter RSS

By Second Assistant Fire Chief Graham Glauber
February 16, 2021

Just after 6 a.m. on February 16th, Bedford Fire was dispatched to the area of 501 Harris Road for a possible structure fire. Bedford Hills Tanker 5 and Katonah Ladder 39 were on the automatic mutual aid dispatch assignment.

The actual address was located at 518 Harris Road, putting this in Katonah Fire District. This specific area is the intersection of all three fire/response districts for Bedford, Bedford Hills and Katonah.

Arriving Car 2032 confirmed the working fire, followed by Car 2041 taking command pulling the 10-75 assignment. Bedford Hills Tanker 5 was able to use their apparatus to open the gates to the property, and stretch an initial attack line on the structure. On arrival, a 5 bay, one story garage was found to be fully involved. Car 2043 handled operations during the fire, and command was transitioned to Katonah FD Car 2214.

Engine 110 pulled in as the second due rig and stretched an additional hand line. The two teams quickly knocked down the main body of fire and began overhauling the structure. The ceiling and walls were pulled, ventilation holes cut in the roof, and hydraulic venting used to help dissipate the smoke.

Additional personnel from Katonah FD, Mount Kisco FD (FAST), Banksville FD (tanker) were on scene to assist. Battalion 16 coordinated resources, and our EMS crew from Ambulance 52-B2 transported a firefighter from the scene with a leg injury to Northern Westchester Hospital. After transport, they returned to the scene for standby.

The Cause and Origin Team were also on scene to investigate. Pound Ridge Fire and Armonk EMS covered our station during the event.
