Just after 2 a.m., the Bedford Fire Department were dispatched to an automatic residential fire alarm on Guard Hill Road. Minutes later, the alarm was upgraded to a possible structure fire as the homeowner had discovered smoke coming from their basement. Bedford Hills FD was added to the assignment.
A pocket of fire was located in the floor joists beneath the fire place on the first floor of the house, with extension into the basement walls. A line was stretched from BHFD Tanker 5, and water cans used from Engine 110 and TL-57; the fire was quickly extinguished. Car 2042 was in command for the call.
Some time was spent carefully opening up and exposing the area of fire, making sure to limit damage to the residence and without sacrificing structural supports. Power was turned off to the house, the area was vented and house checked for lingering carbon monoxide.
The Cause and Origin Team determined the cause of the fire to be related to a malfunctioning fireplace.
Bedford EMS, while standing by on scene of the fire, were redirected by 2042 to take in a mutual aid call for KBHVAC on Babbitt Road. |
