| As things started to "quiet down" from a busy start to the new year, the Bedford Fire Department was requested to respond to a motor vehicle accident with injuries in the area of Exit 4 off of Interstate 684.
Shortly after dispatch, around 10:50 p.m., Ambulance 52-B1 and Rescue 44 called in service, responding to the scene. 60 Control, as notified by both Bedford and State Police, updated the accident location as the northbound exit ramp, with a confirmed extrication.
On arrival a small Mitsubishi sedan was found with heavy front end damage after colliding with the rear tailgate of a paper delivery truck stopped at the traffic light. The driver of the sedan appeared to be in stable condition, and was being monitored closely by Bedford EMS and paramedics from Westchester EMS. Before transport could happen, the driver's legs had to be freed from underneath the steering column. In order to do so, a dash roll utilizing hydraulic rams and spreaders was performed. Using the large delivery truck as an anchor point, the dashboard was lifted from the steering column, successfully freeing the occupant from the vehicle. Additional manpower arrived on scene with Engine 109 to clean up debris from the roadway and direct traffic.
The patient was transported by Ambulance 52-B1 to Northern Westchester Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. |
