Midnight Rollover Closes South Bedford Road

By YP Lieutenant Graham Glauber
January 23, 2008

In the early morning hours of January 23rd., at around 12:30 am, 60-Control received a report of a possible extrication in the area of 632 South Bedford Road, the Fox Lane School Campus, and dispatched Bedford Police and Fire units to the call.

On the arrival of Car 2043, Bedford Police, and the Westchester EMS Medic, a single car was located upside-down and down an embankment, after an apparent rollover over the guard rail. The occupant was quickly packaged and transported to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, New York by Ambulance 52-B1.

While en-route to the Medical Center, the crew aboard 52-B1 alerted Car 2043 of the possibility of additional occupants in the vehicle at the time of the accident. All available members at the scene immediately focused on thoroughly searching the embankment and used both hand lights and the light tower on Engine 109 to illuminate the area. The thermal imaging camera was used as well. After primary and secondary searches were negative, efforts were focused on lifting the vehicle off the ground to confirm no additional occupants trapped under the vehicle. The high pressure air bag system and cribbing on Rescue 44 was placed under the vehicle and successfully lifted it, revealing no additional patients.

At the conclusion of the searches, a wrecker from Northern Westchester Autobody arrived to remove the car (rolled upside down over a guardrail, between a tree and telephone pole). After nearly half an hour of recovery, the road was cleared of all debris, and South Bedford Road reopened to traffic.

Units: Car 2043, Car 2044, Ambulance 52-B1, Rescue 44, Engine 109

Mutual Aid: WEMS 45-Medic, Bedford Police, Northern Westchester Towing
